About LUNGRANG SOUTH LOCAL

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH

Lungrang village is located about 53 KM from Lunglei. It is a village situated on the western side along the Chawngte Road. It is a pleasant and scenic village located on a hilltop. Previously, Lungrang was under a single Village Council (VC). Due to world progress and development, the Government directed the main road below the village. Consequently, the majority of households shifted down to the roadside (where we are currently located). Today, two VCs have been established. Likewise, two churches have come into existence. Furthermore, from Lungrang South Local, Dinthar Local was also established along the road towards Chawngte.

Surprisingly, despite some misunderstandings that arose at the time between those who moved down towards the main road and those who remained at the original village site, it is fortunate that no major problems occurred within our UPC Church. On 22nd January 1984, under the consent of the District Pastor, Pastor Rodawla, Lungrang South Local was officially established, led by Elder Patawia.

Thus, the official date of the establishment of the Church is 22nd January 1984. The leaders at that time were:

  • Chairman : Elder Lalnghinglova
  • Secretary/Treasurer : Rbt. Lalchawia

Today, most of the church leaders from that era have passed away, while Elder Lianzuala is currently residing in Chawngte Local and is still alive with us.

CHURCH BUILDING

Before the church was established, in 1983, a church building made of bamboo walls, measuring 30 feet in length and 15 feet in width, had already been erected. For seating, tied bamboo was used.

On 22nd December 1983, the construction of the bamboo church building was completed. On the night of 25th December 1983, it was inaugurated and occupied.

The first church building was made of bamboo walls, and the following year, a Semi-Pucca structure was constructed, which stood from 1985 to 1989. After that, an Assam Type building was constructed in 1990. Presently, we have an RCC Church building. Since the location of the original church building was somewhat inconvenient for access, the Church Board Committee requested the VC for the land above Pu Patawia's house along the upper road leading to Upper Lungrang. As that was not granted, the present church location was requested instead. Originally, this location was intended for a hospital site. However, through the dedicated efforts of our leaders, we were able to acquire this present excellent church site.

PRESENT STATUS

At present, we have over 282 church members (Year 2025). We consist of around 62 households. All departments are fully functional, and at the time of preparing this report, an RCC Sunday School Hall is being constructed by the roadside, designed so the lower floor can be occupied. The upper floor is used as the Sunday School Hall, which is of great benefit to the church members.

  • Treasurer : Elder C. Rinthanga
  • Statistician : Elder C. Lalnunpara
