About ZION LOCAL, VENGHLUN

Pioneering Initiatives for Establishing the Second Church Building:

Since around 1996, as the Venghlun Local Church location was somewhat low and steep, the idea of establishing a second church building was discussed in hopes of creating better accessibility, especially for the elderly and infirm. Certain initiatives were also carried out by members from the upper part of the locality. However, upon the request of the Church Board, these efforts were not pursued further. By 2005, the establishment of a second church building was brought up again and was discussed in the Local Church Board Committee meetings on January 10, 2006, and May 23, 2006. It was resolved that "a plot of land should be purchased first for the second church building," and initiatives were carried out by collecting free-will offerings (vehbur) from every household in the church. The Church Board Committee resolution No. 5 on November 3, 2009, formed a committee to search for a church land plot, but due to financial constraints, no concrete decision could be finalized at the time. Around this period, there was also a proposal that "the current church land be sold and relocated elsewhere," and initiatives were taken towards it. The Church Board Committee resolution No. 3 on October 11, 2011, resolved: "Believing that Pu Zoramchhanthanga's plot of land would be advantageous for the ongoing church relocation project, and even if it does not proceed as planned, considering it suitable for constructing the second church building, it should be purchased." An advance payment of Rs. 50,000 was sanctioned and paid as resolved.

An application was submitted to the District for funds to purchase the land. In response, District Board resolution vide LD UPC/B/DCB/2012/69, understanding our difficulties, sanctioned Rs. 3,50,000, while the Local Church contributed Rs. 70,000 (20%). Payment was made from the Second Church Building Account. This significantly paved the way for establishing the second church building.

Establishment and Inauguration of the Second Church:

Once the land was secured, the Church Board Committee formed a Fund Raising Committee on January 24, 2014, which actively took steps toward constructing the second church building. The proposal prepared by the Church Board Office Bearers and Fund Raising Committee—stating "a new Assam-type church building shall be constructed, measuring 48 ft in length and 24 ft in width, with an estimated cost of Rs. 2,42,110/-"—was approved by UPC Venghlun Church Board Committee Resolution No. 4 on April 6, 2014. Persons were appointed to collect materials, and active work was carried out.

Name Adoption and Construction Efforts for the Second Church:

Proposals were invited for naming the second church building, and from three submitted suggestions, the Church Board Committee approved the name 'ZION LOCAL'. On November 15, 2014, Rev. C. Darkhuma, District Superintendent, laid the foundation stone for the church construction. Under the organization of Rev. C. Zohmingliana, Headquarters Section Pastor, a voluntary community work drive (hnatlang) was held, where 33 members worked to clear the construction site. On November 17, 2014, actual church construction work began with 20 voluntary workers. Following this, work continued uninterrupted. Voluntary work drives were called 73 times, utilizing 1,352 man-days of labor. Volunteers from outside the church also assisted, contributing nearly 24 man-days of labor.

Occupancy and Inauguration of Zion Local Church:

Upon completion of the church building, it was deemed fit for immediate occupancy. April 18, 2015, was fixed as the date, and Section Pastor Rev. P. Lalthanga inaugurated the church building. On the inauguration day, various gifts were received from church members as well as external well-wishers. Prior to the inauguration, items such as the pulpit, table, lectern, and various other essential needs were prepared in advance to be used concurrently with the official church separation.

First Leaders of Zion Local Church:

On April 19, 2015, a Church Board Committee meeting was held, and the local church was officially formed. Two additional preachers were appointed. At the time of separation, the congregation had around 225 members, including members previously attending Venglai Local who joined as well.
