About CHHUMKHUM LOCAL
Chhumkhum :
The name of the village is pronounced similar to 'Lukhum', specifically with the tone used for 'Khum'. It is situated in the western part of Lunglei District, about 9 KM before reaching Lungsen village, right at the major road junction leading toward Chawngte. Formerly, the BRTF maintained a camp here. Additionally, it serves as an important site for the Agriculture Department's Seed Farm. Being located within the territorial jurisdiction of Lungsen VC, the residents requested permission to establish a formal village, and in 1981, it was recognized as a village starting with only two households. Later in 1985, a few individuals joined from Rangte village, all of whom were existing UPC members from Rangte.
By 2023, the village had grown to nearly 60 households with a population of over 280 inhabitants. They do not yet have an independent Village Council (VC) and remain under the administration of the Lungsen Village Council, led by the Lungsen VC Chairman.
Initial Formation of UPC :
On Friday, September 4, 1985, under the leadership of Lungsen Section Pastor T. Bualzika, over 70 people gathered from various villages across the section—including Lungsen, Lungrang, and Rangte—to organize a Revival service. At that time, no other church denomination existed in the area. For this gathering, the Lungsen 'S' Local UPC church contributed both a large drum (Khuangpui) and a small drum (Khuang tê). Lacking a church building, a petition was submitted to the District headquarters. However, as it was not granted or constructed, the PCI denomination took notice and invited the members, promising to build a church for them. Consequently, the members joined the other denomination, and our church presence ceased thereafter for a period.
Re-establishment :
On Sunday, August 6, 2006, during the tenure of Lungsen Section Pastor Rev. K. Lalchamliana, a Mobile Crusade was conducted under his leadership. Dedicated believers contributed several vehicles to transport around 300 gathered people, and a service was held right at the busy junction near the residence of Mr. Dines and his wife Nazii. The church was re-established here, registering 19 members under UPC NEI; 8 individuals were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and 3 children were dedicated.
Bro. V. Zadinga, who was serving as the 2nd OC at Lungsen P/S at the time, played a vital and highly enthusiastic role in establishing the UPC Church here. Following this, church leaders were appointed as follows:
Appointed Church Elders : 1. V. Vanchhunga 2. Vanlalliana
Church Leaders :
| Chairman | Upa. V. Vanchhunga |
| Secretary & Treasurer | Upa Vanlalliana |
As a newly established church, worship services were held at the home of Upa V. Vanchhunga for some time. Later, formal requests and correspondence were diligently pursued with their C.O. and the Aizawl Headquarters to utilize the Church Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) Godown, which was fortunately granted. That Godown building served as the church building for a long period. Meanwhile, a suitable plot of land for a permanent church building was conveniently acquired nearby.
Construction of the Church Building :
Once the land for the church was acquired, constructing a building was beyond the local members' financial capability, so a petition was submitted to the District. The 156th District Board sanctioned Rs. 1,00,000/-, and using these funds, the District constructed the current church building. The pioneers and individuals who dedicated their effort, labor, and financial resources toward establishing the church are truly commendable.
The establishment of Chhumkhum Church was made possible primarily through the dedicated zeal, determination, and untiring efforts of Section Pastor Rev. K. Lalchamliana, alongside the work of God. Furthermore, the acquisition of the church land was entirely achieved through his initiative and planning. May glory be to the Lord.
As a Home Mission Field :
In 2013, the District Mission Department declared it a Home Mission Field, where Home Missionaries were stationed. Missionaries who served under the District include Evan. Muanpuia Colney and Evan. Lallawmsanga. Those employed by Lungsen Section who served here include Evan Lalrokima Chhangte and Rbt. C. Lalhriatzuala. In 2017, its status as a Mission Field was temporarily closed. From April 2023, the Section Missions initiative re-engaged a worker (Home Missionary) once again.
Current Office Bearers :
| Chairman | Upa. Zodingliana |
| Secretary | Sist. Zoramsangi (L) / Rbt. C. Lalhriatzuala (Evangelist) |
| Treasurer | Upa V. Lalremruata |
At present, the church consists of four (4) families living under the guidance of a Home Missionary, with a total membership of around 18 (as of 2025).
