About KANGHMUN ‘S’ LOCAL

HISTORY OF CHURCH FORMATION

Kanghmun ‘S’ is located along the ridge line between Lunglei and Thenzawl, closer to Thenzawl within the Lunglei District jurisdiction under the Chhipphir Section. The church was originally established in this village on March 17, 1962, with just 8 members. The history of its strong foundation is documented on page 111 of the Lunglei District UPC History Book. Up until 1995, it remained a vibrant local church. Regrettably, leadership friction arose among local church board members, leading to a decision to split. As the situation did not improve, a meeting was convened on August 24, 1995, where separation was deemed necessary, and the following initial officers were appointed:

  • Chairman : Bro. C. Zathanga
  • Secretary : Bro. Thangliana
  • Treasurer : Bro. Lalluma

Consequently, separate worship services were established, and a temporary bamboo-walled church building was erected in the lower section (Vengthlang) of Kanghmun, designated as Kanghmun Vengthlang Local. The remaining group in the upper section joined the Mizoram UPC. A legal dispute ensued regarding the ownership of the original church building and plot. In 2000, as part of the UPC North East India Golden Jubilee celebrations, forgiveness was extended, the court case was withdrawn, and the original church property was granted to them. Following the dissolution of the upper section local church, the name Kanghmun Vengthlang Local was restored to its original title, Kanghmun ‘S’ Local. At the time of separation, the membership stood at 34.

CHURCH BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

When World Bank road construction damaged their church property, the church received Rs. 1,08,025.00 in compensation. Additionally, Pu Sapchhunga, a World Bank employee, purchased an alternate plot for Rs. 4,000.00, bringing immense joy to the congregation. Preparing the new site involved strenuous manual labor, during which neighboring churches assisted and World Bank machinery aided in excavation. Construction officially commenced on February 13, 2006, with pillar digging. The resulting building featured concrete pillars and skirting, tile walls, and a corrugated iron roof, measuring 39 feet in length and 18 feet in width, equipped with modern church furnishings.

The current RCC church building in use marks the third church facility constructed by the local, measuring 52 feet in length and 26 feet in width.
