About DAWN LOCAL
It is quite difficult to determine the exact origin of Dawn village. Around 1927–1929, when Baichi village was abandoned, a significant number of people appeared to have moved to Dawn village. At that time, Dawn was a normal Mizo village of about 30 households. The Baptist Church was already established, and the church maintained traditional community practices such as collecting firewood and rice during bereavements. Pu Liannawla, who was one of the church workers in the Baptist Church at that time, eventually became one of the key figures responsible for establishing the UPC in Dawn village.
The early leaders of Dawn Church were:
Lianhnawla, C. Lalruata, Chalzama, Zawnpianga, Kawlsailova, Aikhuma, Thanmawia, Hrangkhuma, Lalliana, and Rochhinga. In October 1961, the UPC Church in Dawn village was established, and its initial leaders were as follows:
| Chairman | : | Pu Liannawla |
| Secretary/Treasurer | : | Pu C Lalruata |
| Church Workers | : | Pi Lalliani, Pu Zambawnga, Pu Rochhinga, Pu Aikhuma, Pu Thanmawia |
Establishment of the Church :
Pi Lalliani used to host Pastor Lalthima as a guest, and her home was used as a gathering place. As time passed, she felt a desire to be baptized in the name of Jesus. However, being somewhat hesitant to undergo baptism in Dawn village, she went and received baptism in Theiriat. She thus became the first person from Dawn village to be baptized in Jesus' name. Around this same period, Pu Liannawla, a Baptist church worker, found himself spiritually uneasy and inactive in his church duties. While in this state, during a visit to Theiriat, he was baptized in the name of Jesus, making him the second person from Dawn village to be baptized in Jesus' name.
Following this, Pu Lawmkima, Pu Saptluanga, Pu Tlangrema, and two others received baptism. Pu Lawmkima remained in the church, but the others did not continue with the UPC.
Later in 1961, Evangelist Hrangtlinga, along with Pi Zathangi (who possessed gifts of speaking in tongues and spiritual dancing) and another companion, conducted ministry there. Consequently, Pi Thangliani, Pu Lalruata, Pi Darvaimawii, Pi Khuangi, Pu Zambawnga, Pu Zawna, Pu Aikhuma, Pu Zabanga, Pu Rochhinga, and Pu Sailova were also baptized in the name of Jesus.
Church Building Construction :
After the church was formed, as they did not have a dedicated church building, they held worship services at the homes of Pu Liannawla and Pu C. Lalruata. In 1962, a temporary bamboo-and-thatch church building was constructed. During the existence of old Dawn village, temporary church buildings were constructed twice. At that time, church membership had reached 60. A notable detail during the church construction was that Pu Kaphranga, a prominent Baptist church worker and choir conductor, personally assisted in building the church. On February 17, 1967, the villagers of Dawn were relocated by the army to Zobawk under regrouping orders, causing the Dawn Church to temporarily disperse.
Hardships and Notable Events During Church Establishment :
The hardships endured in Dawn village as God established His church were both terrifying and extraordinary. Just as several families comprising well over 50 individuals were baptized in Jesus' name, Pu Lawmkima's family suffered a tragic bereavement, losing their daughter.
In the midst of their distress, they were in great dilemma over who would conduct the funeral service. While Pu C. Lalruata was making arrangements to officiate, they learned that Evangelist Hrangtlinga had just arrived from Herhse village. They were greatly relieved, quickly summoned him, and Evangelist Hrangtlinga conducted the funeral service.
After this, another notable event occurred regarding bereavement: Pi Khawli's mother passed away. The Baptist Church refused to collect firewood and rice for her funeral. However, about a month later, the VCP at that time, Pu Suakzawna, threatened them, saying, "Why are you not collecting firewood and rice just because an UPC member died? If you do not collect it, I will expel you." Subsequently, after leaders from both churches conferred, the collection of rice and firewood was resumed. This occurred during the insurgency period, following house burnings and re-settlement into temporary hamlets.
Resettlement of Dawn Village and Re-establishment of the Church :
As the Mizoram insurgency began to subside, government directives in 1972 permitted residents to return to their original village sites. People who previously worshiped together without separate denominational services grew enough in number to conduct separate services by mid-1979.
The interim leaders appointed around mid-1979 were:
| Chairman | : | Pu Darthangpuia |
| Secretary | : | Pu Mana |
| Treasurer | : | Pu Liansanga |
Following this, in 1980, the church was formally organized according to UPC order. Pastor Lalthima, who was the Chanmari Pastorate Minister at the time, reportedly organized it from Zobawk village, opting not to travel directly to Dawn village.
The leaders appointed during this organization were:
| Chairman | : | Pu R. Liannghina |
| Secretary | : | Pu C. Lianchhunga |
| Treasurer | : | Pu Liansanga |
| Church Workers | : | Pu F. Biakkhuma, Pu R. Malsawma |
LAD :
| President | : | Sist R. Sapmawii |
| Secretary/Treasurer | : | Sist Lalruati |
At that time, there were around 51 members across 9 households.
Current Church Status :
Currently, due to road expansion works carried out by NHIDCL, parts of the church grounds remain unresolved, and efforts are underway to construct a church building in 2025. On June 7, 2025, Rev. Jerry Lalmuanawma, Section Pastor, laid the foundation stone for a 60/30 feet church building. However, as the site was deemed less than ideal, efforts are being made to find an alternative site. Currently (in 2025), there are over 209 members.
