About PHAIRUANGCHHUAH LOCAL

Phairuangchhuah village is located within the Zawlpui Pastorate, 5 km west of Putlungasih, across the Kau River. This village was pastored and cared for by the Isua Kohhran (IK) for 22 years. There are about 48 households in this village, including government buildings. Among them, there is 1 Chakma Baptist Church (CBC) family, 1 Buddhist family, and a good number of individuals who do not wish to commit to Christianity. Apart from them, the rest belong to the IK Church, serving under the care of their active Missionary, Mr. C. Lawmsiama.

In the year 2023, the Zawlpui Pastorate Mid-Year Board held in July passed a resolution to take steps toward establishing a church and undertaking an evangelistic mission in Phairuangchhuah, entrusting the mission to the Pastorate Minister, Pastor R. Lalremsiama. Following up on this decision, on July 24, 2023, the Pastorate Minister's family, along with Elder Thantluanga (Belthei Local) and Sis. Rinzaui (Putlungasih Local), visited Phairuangchhuah to inspect the land and assess whether a church could be established. After this, the Pastorate Minister and Pastorate Secretary Elder Andrew Lalremsanga visited again on January 12, 2024. They met with the IK Missionary and their local leaders there, who requested them to wait a bit longer. However, since the Pastorate deemed it proper to proceed with the mission first, a team of 5 people led by the Pastorate Minister went on an evangelistic trip on January 27, 2024.

The mission team members on this occasion were Pastor R. Lalremsiama, Elder Lalthantluanga, Bro. Lalramthabeiseia, Elder Andrew Lalremsanga, and Elder David Lalchhuangliana. During this mission trip, they held a meeting with the leaders and Missionary of the IK Church, where it was mutually agreed that establishing a UPC Church was good. However, the IK Church leaders again requested our mission team to wait for the decisions of their Assembly. Consequently, the team returned home for the time being. Nevertheless, after waiting for a considerable period, the IK side sent no word, and it was later learned that they were consolidating their own position within their church. As a result, without waiting any longer for word from the IK Church, the Pastorate Minister, Pastorate Secretary, and 2 others went down to Phairuangchhuah on December 30, 2024, to establish a church. On this occasion, Pastor R. Lalremsiama welcomed 13 families consisting of 59 members, and the church was officially established. The leaders were appointed on an ad-hoc basis as follows:

Chairman : Bro. Balup Chakma
Secretary : Bro. Zima Chakma
Treasurer : Bro. Lalramthana

Having received funds from the Lunglei District Church to celebrate the New Year at Phairuangchhuah, our Home Missionary at Putlungasih, Evan. Lalhriatmawia, was tasked with joining them for the New Year. He welcomed another 15 members into the fold, and thus a church was fully established in Phairuangchhuah, bringing our membership to 74.

Following the establishment of the church, the 2025 District Missions Conference was held at Chawngte Local. The District Missions Board meeting on this occasion officially opened Phairuangchhuah as a District Missions Field, and during the same session, Deacon PC. Laldingliana from Mualthuam 'N' Electric Local was appointed as the Home Missionary for the Phairuangchhuah Field. As progress continued, leaders from the Lunglei District came to inspect the site; Rev. PC. Lalfakawma, District Secretary of UPC Lunglei District, visited and inspected the land. Subsequently, the District Board purchased a fine, spacious plot of land for the church property at Phairuangchhuah for Rs. 1,50,000/-. After finalizing the land purchase, the District Missions Department immediately sanctioned Rs. 80,000/- for constructing a Home Missionary Quarters at Phairuangchhuah. Under the leadership of the Zawlpui Pastorate Missions Department and Pastor R. Lalremsiama, Pastorate Minister, members from across the pastorate held a Work Camp and built it within two weeks.

Due to the inconvenient location of Phairuangchhuah, transportation of materials and building supplies was extremely difficult, leading to a severe shortage of funds. While facing this challenging period, the Headquarters Local Missions Department unexpectedly provided us with Rs. 20,000/- to assist with the Quarters construction, and we further received an additional Rs. 10,000/- requested from the District Missions Department. Gratefully, we were able to complete the Quarters, an Assam-type structure measuring 16x27 feet with tin roofing, tile walls, and wooden flooring. During the construction of the Quarters, open-air services were also held at night.

At that time, Rev. C. Vanlalena, our General Missions Director of UPC NEI, requested the Melbourne UPC in Australia to sponsor a worker for Phairuangchhuah due to the new church establishment. Thanks to his efforts, Melbourne UPC agreed to cover the worker's salary for 1 year. Additionally, we received a Crusade fund of Rs. 12,000/- from Mr. PK. Chinzah, our fellow minister at Melbourne UPC. Furthermore, upon completion of the Quarters, they sent another Rs. 50,000/- for purchasing Quarters property and Rs. 10,000/- for worker support. We are deeply grateful to Rev. C. Vanlalena, General Missions Director, who exerted every effort to help us receive all these provisions. We firmly believe that the Lord will continue to bless him and Melbourne UPC.

Prior to the completion of the Quarters, for 3 months, Home Missionary Deacon PC. Laldingliana oversaw Phairuangchhuah from the Zawlpui Pastor Quarters, frequently traveling back and forth, staying overnight and visiting regularly. Before the Quarters was finished, new members were welcomed on two separate occasions—two families totaling 8 members. After the Quarters was completed, the Home Missionary officially moved into the new Quarters on May 7, 2025, accompanied by leaders of the Pastorate Missions Department, the Pastorate Minister, and several members from the pastorate.

With the completion of the Quarters, efforts to carry on the ministry continued wholeheartedly to gain new members and consolidate existing ones. Plans for building a church building were also actively underway. Funds for constructing the church building from the District Church were already placed in the hands of the Pastorate Minister, and steps were continuously taken to have a church building as soon as possible.

Currently, at Phairuangchhuah Local, there are 86 members at the time of writing this report (in 2025).

The foundation stone for the church building was laid by Rev. C. Lalrintluanga, District Superintendent, on October 31, 2025. It was constructed through Work Camps and voluntary labor, measuring 38/15 Feet in length and width.
