About TLABUNG LOCAL

Establishment of the Church

In 1960, Dr. H. Thanglura and his wife came to reside in Tlabung while working at the Tlabung Hospital. In 1961, Pastor Lalthianghlima was invited to perform ministry work. Through his ministry, several people expressed the desire to receive baptism. Pastor Lalthianghlima conducted baptismal services, with Pu Sentawta becoming the very first convert to be baptized. Others followed suit, and within a short time, the membership quickly reached 65 believers. Through Pastor Lalthianghlima's ministry, the church was officially established on November 3, 1961. Worship services were initially held at the residence of Dr. H. Thanglura.

The prominent pioneering leaders during the establishment of the church included Dr. H. Thanglura, Lalsikhupi (wife of Dr. H. Thanglura), J. Thantluanga (P/S Teacher), Lianchhunga, Zathanga, Chhunglawma, and Sentawta. Zathanga and Sentawta were active ministers in the Baptist Church at the time. The first appointed Elders were Elder J. Thantluanga, Elder Zathanga, and Elder Lianchhunga.

On March 11, 1962, Sectional Pastor J. Laltluanga formally organized the church, marking the very first leadership appointments. The pioneer leaders of Tlabung were:

  • Chairman : Elder J. Thantluanga
  • Secretary : Elder Lianchhunga
  • Treasurer : Dr. H. Thanglura

Church Board Members :
Khawlha, Chhunglawma, Sentawta, and Elder Zathanga.

Development of the Church Building

The first church building was constructed on May 25, 1962, using bamboo walls (Maurap), measuring 24x12 feet. In 1966, a larger building was constructed. In 1970, it was rebuilt using sawn timber, while retaining thatch (Di) and bamboo for the roof and walls. In 1978, it was rebuilt as an Assam-type structure. In 1981, the Church Board Committee resolved to build a concrete structure, and by 1985, a concrete church building measuring 50x28 feet was constructed. Unfortunately, a cyclone in 1991 damaged the structure. By May 1991, it was reconstructed and made ready for use. The foundation stone for the current church building was laid on May 4, 2006, by Rev. B. Kamliana, Sectional Pastor, and excavation for the pillar foundations began on May 5, 2006. Measuring 57x27 feet, the section now enjoys a well-established and beautiful church building.

Present Status

At present, the local church has 211 members (as of 2025). Adjacent to the church building, construction of a Sunday School Hall and Committee Room measuring 32x60 feet is currently underway, progressing rapidly under the supervision of Sectional Pastor Muanpuia Colney.
