About BUALPUI H LOCAL

Bualpui H stands for Hemphunga Bualpui, located about 5 km south of Thingsai. It is a pleasant village connected from Bualpui village to Saisih chhuah by a wide main road leading to the confluence of the Tiau and Tuipui rivers.

Its Beginning:

Even before 1979, existing UPC members such as Pu Zahaiha and Pu Gurunga resided here, though they later left for other denominations. In April 1986, the families of Chhanthawna and Lalnghaka, who were already church elders, migrated from Bungtlang in Myanmar. On Sunday, April 24, 1986, they conducted family-level worship services, as they were unable to hold full congregation gatherings.

Led by the Section Pastor at the time, Rev. C. Darnghaka, ministry visits were occasionally conducted along with brethren from Thingsai, organizing worship meetings at the home of Pu Buanthanga, a Baptist minister. Although there were no converts initially, the few members remained faithful to the UPC. From 1987 onwards, Pastor CS. Pachhunga visited regularly, conducting services at Pu Chhanthawna's residence, which also served as his lodging. Though no formal appointments were made, Pu Chhanthawna and Pu Gurunga functioned as leaders acting as church elders. That year, Pastor CS. Pachhunga stayed for 2-3 days at a time, engaging with other denominations, though direct converts remained scarce.

Growth in Membership:

In 1988, PC. Dailova and his team conducted evangelical ministry in Bualpui, receiving strong enthusiasm from the people. Through their ministry, Tv. Rochama, Biakhlua, and Liansanga became the first individuals native to Bualpui H village to receive baptism.

In 1989, PC. Dailova's team returned for ministry, during which significant spiritual breakthroughs occurred. They invited Evan. Lalnghinga and Pastor CS. Pachhunga to join them for an extended stay. On Sunday afternoon, April 2, 1989, during an outdoor service, Rev. CS. Pachhunga preached from 2 Timothy 2:5 on 'competing in athletics,' which the listeners received with deep interest. That evening, PC. Dailova's team preached using a loudspeaker, followed by Baptist leaders who also responded using loudspeakers, leading to intense public exchanges. Led by the Pastor, PC. Dailova and others took turns preaching throughout the night in what felt like a holy battle. This ministry marked a period of deep commitment to the UPC. The membership grew from about 25 to around 60 members, allowing all church departments to be fully organized.

Following this sudden growth, many members were not yet firmly grounded in faith, facing strong opposition from the Baptist church. Moreover, since the majority were youth, about 12 returned to their former church, but 31 new members joined. Until 1993, the membership remained around 70, and by 2021, it reached approximately 120.

Past Leaders:

In 1989, Sawikhuma, a minister and Sunday School Secretary from the Baptist Church, joined the UPC. The church was formally organized for the first time on April 23, 1989, under the leadership of Section Pastor CS. Pachhunga and Elder Thanzaua of Cherhlun as follows:

ChairmanElder Chhanthawna
SecretaryElder Sawikhuma
TreasurerT Lalnghaka

Support for the Church:

Being a newly established church, brethren from Thingsai provided immense support in meeting various needs, including lanterns, clothing, tables, financial aid, and voluntary labor. The Section Mother Church donated a church bell, while the local VCP, Lianhrula, provided cups and a Petromax lamp. To this day, the Lord has remained with the Bualpui Church, and it continues to be blessed with many supporters.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHURCH BUILDINGS:

Considering their small membership, Bualpui H UPC has built a remarkably high number of church buildings. They have already built three church structures, and the current project marks their fourth.

First Church Building:

In 1988, Pastor CS. Pachhunga proposed the idea of constructing a church building. After securing the land through the Village Council, the first voluntary work drive (hnatlang) was held on Monday, June 20, 1988, following a Crusade on June 18, 1988. Using collected timber, the framework was erected while waiting for the winter season to harvest bamboo. PC. Dailova's team visited for ministry, purchased thatch for the roof, and assisted with walls and other needs, completing the first church building for worship by April 1989.

Second Church Building:

The first building was a simple bamboo structure, which was unfortunately destroyed by a severe storm the following year in 1990. Left without a building, the congregation held worship services in private homes for nearly two years.

Rather than rebuilding with bamboo, plans were made to construct a timber house. Timber was sawn and seasoned through hard labor. A work camp from Thingsai assisted in transporting the timber, which was greatly appreciated. Section Pastor Rev. PC. Doliana petitioned the District level for roofing sheets, resulting in 4 bundles of CGI sheets being granted and delivered as far as Cherhlun. From Cherhlun, in the absence of motor transport, members carried the heavy sheets on their shoulders all the way to Bualpui. Though exhausting, those times remain memorable. With preparation underway, construction of the second church building began in early 1992 under the leadership of Section Pastor Rev. PC. Doliana. Being a small congregation, Thingsai Local provided maternal-like support with finances, labor, and resources. With this community support, the second church building—complete with CGI roofing, sawn timber frame, and bamboo walling—was completed by late 1992.

Third Church Building:

After using the second church building for 8 years, the temporary timber posts and bamboo walls began to decay, creating safety concerns. Consequently, in accordance with the Church Board resolution, the building was dismantled on March 8, 1999.

Due to severe financial constraints, members engaged in wage labor, visited river areas, distributed donation envelopes to families, and created traditional woven handicrafts to raise funds. Lacking money to hire workers, timber craftsmen Elder Vanhlira and Elder Vanlalnghaka were engaged on a barter/voluntary basis. Displaying great dedication, these two cut all the timber required for the third church building. The Cherhlun Local PYD conducted a work camp to transport timber, while the District provided attention and collected funds for the building at the Saiha conference. Construction began on May 1, 2000, and was completed in early 2001.

Fourth Church Building:

With modern developments and rising living standards, a desire arose to upgrade beyond an Assam-type structure. Combined with increased support from the District level, the Church Board Committee resolved to construct an RCC building. Fund-raising efforts for the fourth church building commenced in 2019 through wage labor, river expeditions, and set household financial targets. Section Pastor H. Lallawmsanga laid the foundation stone on June 15, 2020, after which construction immediately began. The proposed dimensions for the fourth church building are 54 feet in length and 27 feet in width. Currently, the pillars and beams are completed, with plans to construct a fine building Lord willing.

Great Works of God in Bualpui H Local UPC:

Regarding the Silver Jubilee:

Bualpui H Local UPC has experienced rich divine guidance amidst various scoffs and criticisms.

April 4, 2014, marked the Silver Jubilee of Bualpui H Church. Desiring to celebrate but lacking any funds with just one month remaining, the Church Board Committee resolved: 'Relying on "Jehovah Jireh", we will journey into the wilderness for 2 nights, and if the Lord wills, He will provide for our Jubilee celebration.'

On Monday morning, March 3, 2014, nine individuals relying on Jehovah Jireh set out into the wilderness to find game for the Jubilee feast, carrying 3 guns, 3 standard fishing nets, and 3 throw nets. Humanly speaking, the prospects were bleak, but trusting God, they headed down toward the Tiau River.

Upon reaching the Tiau River, morale was low. Right before them, at the very campsite where 20 members of the Baptist BMP equipped with weapons had stayed for three nights without success, the group set up camp. At daybreak, three hunters set out. Around 7:00 AM, a gunshot echoed, filling the camp with joy as Brother Ruallianmawia shot a male barking deer.

How the Barking Deer Was Taken:

"I had just seated myself at my hunting spot when a male barking deer approached, and I shot it. It did not collapse immediately, so I tracked its blood trail. Losing the trail, I looked around anxiously when it barked, guiding me toward it. This happened three times—I lost the trail, it called out, and I followed until it led me right back near our campsite, where I landed the final shot. Without needing to carry it, the animal itself led me back to camp," he shared. The distance between the initial shot location and the camp was nearly 2 km.

Around 2:00 PM in the afternoon, hunters set out again. Around midnight, near the local Darnam salt lick, Brother Biaknawla quickly grazed a giant male sambar deer with a shot. Frightened, the deer leaped down a 40-foot drop where God seemed to have prepared a trap: it landed wedged tight between two tree trunks about the thickness of a dog's body. With its feet unable to touch the ground and only its head free to move, Brother Biaknawla pressed the muzzle of his gun directly to its forehead and dispatched it. Without requiring heavy transport from afar, the Lord brought it close to camp, and nearly 50 church members helped haul the meat.

Converting the game into funds yielded over Rs. 30,000/-. Section Pastor R. Lalsangzuala inaugurated the Jubilee, which was celebrated joyfully with a feast, hosting guests from various section villages and the Bungtlang Church from Myanmar.

The Dog That Damaged the Main Drum:

Shortly after completing the first church building, amid intense ridicule from outsiders, a newly framed large drum placed inside the church—with its leather skin still raw—was chewed and torn apart by Pu Tawka's dog. The members were angry, embarrassed, and grieved. However, the Lord acknowledged their distress: the very next morning at daybreak, the dog was found caught and killed in a porcupine trap set by church elder Pu Gurunga, surprising everyone.
