About KHUANGHLUM LOCAL

UPC Before Regrouping (Sawi khawm hma) :

On January 17, 1954, Pu Zakamlova, the chief leader of the UPC in Mizoram, came to Khuanghlum and stayed at the Chief's residence in Khuanghlum. As he shared the doctrines and principles of the UPC, it captured the hearts of several people, and they established a Church immediately. Initially, they were not many in number, and those listed below were the founding members of the Church:

1) Pu Lalngura (Chief)2) Pi Chhimtawni (Chieftainess)
3) Pu Zabuaia4) Pi Doziki
5) Pu Chhunruma6) Pu Rosiama
7) Pu Thanzauva8) Pu Thanlunga
9) Pu Lianhnuna10) Pu Liantluanga
11) Nl. Hautluangi

These individuals did not join all at once; Pi Chhimtawni and Pi Doziki took the lead earlier, and others joined sequentially afterwards. In addition to those listed here, others continued to join over time, including Pu Saihlira Sailo (son of the Chief), who joined after retiring from the army. Their early leaders were Chairman Pu Zabuaia and Secretary Pu Lalngura, while information on other positions is no longer available.

During this period, the Baptist Church Section Pastor was Pastor Sawiluaia, who struggled to understand the workings of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, songs were even composed to tease him, such as: "Pastor Luaia, go tour your section, entering heaven might be hard for you, for you keep calling the Holy Spirit a demon." When the UPC was established in Khuanghlum village, they managed to erect a church building after a short period. Prior to the regrouping, they constructed a church building twice. They experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit, and though few in number, they were exceedingly joyful and deeply united. However, for the larger primary church and those they had departed from, this was not a welcomed development; they mocked and ridiculed them, often referring to them as 'Papawl ho' (the straw bunch).

The period between 1962 and the insurgency marked their spiritual peak and the highest point in membership, growing to around 150 members. The last leaders before the regrouping while still situated at Khuanghlum were:

ChairmanPu Chhunruma
Vice ChairmanPu Rosiama
SecretaryPu Hrangdailova
Asst. SecretaryPu Thanzauva
TreasurerPu Liantluanga
Fin. SecretaryPu Lianhnuna

This encompasses the known history of the UPC in Khuanghlum village prior to the regrouping. We will now present the church history following the regrouping in 1966.

UPC After Regrouping (Sawi khawm hnu lam) :

In the various villages brought into the regrouping center, except for Thiltlang and Keltan villages, UPC members were present everywhere, facing difficult times alongside other denominations. The main host, Pangzawl Church, did not have a church building at the time, leading to a somewhat helpless entry for everyone. As a result of regrouping, initially, there were no separate denominations; all different church groups gathered as a single church congregation. Shortly thereafter, they separated into their respective denominations again. Since the UPC members were relatively few to erect separate church buildings for each individual original village, they gathered as a single local church. Leaders from each original village church continued to hold ministry roles. While worshipping together as one, membership reached over 200. Before acquiring a church building, the Pangzawl congregation held services at private homes, specifically at the residences of Pu Pasuka and Pi Biakthangi.

Shortly after, because a Joint Committee decided that the site leveled by the Hnahchang Baptist Church for their church building should be shared among all villages as one combined worship venue, the Area Officer (AO) at the time granted the plot to the UPC, who were in dire need of a church site—a most welcome development for them. After the major community work subsides, a church building was constructed on this site. The church leaders entering from various villages whose details are known include:

Branching of Khuanghlum Local UPC :

In 1969, as the worship venue was somewhat distant for residents of Melveng, Khuanghlum UPC Church established a separate local branch. A church building was constructed behind the Primary School, above Pu Lalliana's house in Melveng. The known leaders for this church were:

ChairmanUpa Chhunruma
SecretaryUpa Hrangdailova

Post-Regrouping Era :

In the year 1972, people began dispersing from the Pangzawl regrouping center. The people of Khuanghlum did not return to their old village site, but settled permanently in their present location. Since it remained within the Khuanghlum land territory, it continued to bear the name Khuanghlum.

A church building was erected at the current site of Middle School-II (Khuanghlum locality) and occupied for three years. Although the location was quite suitable, it was relocated to the present site of the Pangzawl Community Hall in Khuanghlum locality. While the church building was near completion, the Pioneer personnel contested it as their former site, leading to another relocation just above the current Khuanghlum junction. The Pioneers completely constructed the church building for us and neatly finished smoothing the floor. At this site, the church was rebuilt three times. Though situated in a central and prominent area, the occurrence of disrespectful conduct toward the property was disheartening; indeed, worldly understanding often falls short in comprehending what believers endure for the sake of the Lord's Covenant. Many unmentioned details exist between these accounts, yet amid difficult and grueling times, our pioneers tirelessly blazed trails through God's guidance, and it is a matter of great thanksgiving that through their efforts we have become a beautiful and flourishing Church.

When the year 1985 arrived, the new Pangzawl District was birthed by separating from the Hnahthial District, acquiring its own District Pastor, and Khuanghlum Local became the headquarters for the District Pastor. Three Pastors have emerged from Khuanghlum Local: Pu Zabuaia was ordained as Pastor in 1957, Evan Enmawia was inducted in 1994, and Evan PC. Lalfakawma was inducted in 2005.

Since the creation of Pangzawl District in 1985, through God's blessings amid challenging circumstances, Khuanghlum Local continued to progress, reaching over 200 members by 2020. Because the church building in Khuanghlum locality was slated for demolition due to the widening of NH 54, construction began on a new church building in Venghlun, on land purchased by the District from Pu C. Lalthangvunga's property adjacent to Pu Saikaia's house. Receiving substantial compensation for the new church construction, a grand and modern church was built, which was officially inaugurated on November 16, 2024, by Rev. C. Lalrintluanga, District Superintendent.
